What is it about Sendai?

It was both an easy decision, and a difficult one to decide to move here.

I knew I’d be leaving my friends, job, and beautiful room back in Tokyo, as well as distancing myself further from my wonderful family back in sunny old England.

Not What You First Think

It’s so easy to judge by appearances.

I see a spider, I scream.
I see a child, I think “how cute”
I see a man in a suit, I think he works in an office
I see a foreigner, I think they are an English Teacher (in Japan, this is not too unreasonable considering the limited visa options)
I see a girl in a pretty dress, I think “how popular”

20120913-120619.jpg
I see a live music club, I think of gigs. But this is where we have church.
Funny how things aren’t always what they seem.

The spider eats mosquitoes,
The child has a personality all it’s own.
The man in the suit could be anything
The foreigner could be a tourist, an artist, a business person or a student.
The girl in the pretty dress could be trying her hardest to make friends.

I wonder what people see when they look at me

What do you want people to see?

Annoyed vs Jedi

This morning something rare happened to me.
I got annoyed.

Those of you who know I work with children may be surprised that it’s rare. But it’s true.
I hate insects, I’m really bad at geography and I get annoyed easily at the post office

What I can’t do?

Now that I have more time on my hands I’ve decided to overcome the things I’d convinced myself that I just couldn’t do.

I can’t grow anything, I have a Black thumb:
I now have some seeds growing on the balcony.

20120523-134022.jpg

I can’t be responsible for a pet:
I have a cute little goldfish called Mikan-Chan.

20120523-134122.jpg

I can’t run to save my life:
I’m committed to going jogging with my friends.

All these things are what the world told me.
I choose not to believe them. I choose to overcome the things I’d convinced myself.

What has the world convinced you?

Something I gained in Lifegroup

When I first went to Lifegroup, I had no idea what it was about, only that some people got together to study the Bible,

and I couldn’t think of anything more boring than that other than watching paint dry.

Since that was my only other choice most Sundays, I decided to give it a try. I’d already decided to be a Christian, so why not learn more about it.

When I got there, I didn’t know what to think. There was a group of people, sitting and having coffee together (or in my case, hot chocolate) and chatting and laughing.

Image

They looked like normal people! Well, here is the breaking news…
They Are!
I was confused, weren’t we supposed to be sitting down and seriously diving “deep” into the Bible and talking about weird stuff?

Image

What I really found was a group of friends. Not just people passing through my life, and not people who were there the one week, and gone the next. These people were there for me every week.

Image

More than that, They were there for me during the week too; having breakfast together, and celebrating my birthday.
Every low point in my life those friends are still there for me, and every high point, those same friends are right there to be happy with me.

What did I gain in Lifegroup?
I gained friends

What would you gain from a Lifegroup?

How to get to JLH

Something I learned in Lifegroup.

One of the best things that ever happened to me is joining Lifegroup.
A small group of people meet and share about the amazing things happening in our lives, and the victories over the trials in them.
We give each other good advice, share about what we believe, Read the bible together and have a lot of fun.
Wait a minute… Read the bible AND have fun? Contrary to popular belief, it IS possible.
I used to think that reading the bible was a recipe for boredom:

Take one story about a man who did a bunch of stuff years ago
Add in a lots of names and numbers
Stir it in with a bunch of rules
And let it cook for 2000 years…

NOT!

It’s more like this:

Take stories of people doing action movie-like feats of heroism
Add in lots of stories of romance, treachery and ridiculous bad-guys
Stir it in with the ultimate heroic ending
And see how it keeps on nourishing people for 2000 years

In Lifegroup I learned not to be so prejudiced about things I don’t know about.

Where do you go to grow and learn?

Keep Going!

The other day I went jogging for the first time in a really long time.

I’m not a jogger. I can dance for hours and walk pretty far, but have always told myself that I can’t run for even 30 seconds.

but when I went jogging this time, a friend told me

“Keep on going, you can do it.”

I found that with help, encouragement and challenge, I could go harder and faster than I ever could by my own strength.

In life, we can only get so far by ourselves. With our own strength alone, we can only go as far as we think we can.

How far can you go in life under your own strength?
What do you have in your life that will take you further?
