What is it about Sendai?

It was both an easy decision, and a difficult one to decide to move here.

I knew I’d be leaving my friends, job, and beautiful room back in Tokyo, as well as distancing myself further from my wonderful family back in sunny old England.

I don’t talk about it on this blog often, but church is amazing!

It’s a wonderful place full of people with vision, hope love and a future. Continue reading

Has a decision ever made such a big change in your life that it has changed you completely?

Not What You First Think

It’s so easy to judge by appearances.

I see a spider, I scream.
I see a child, I think “how cute”
I see a man in a suit, I think he works in an office
I see a foreigner, I think they are an English Teacher (in Japan, this is not too unreasonable considering the limited visa options)
I see a girl in a pretty dress, I think “how popular”

I see a live music club, I think of gigs. But this is where we have church.
Funny how things aren’t always what they seem.

The spider eats mosquitoes,
The child has a personality all it’s own.
The man in the suit could be anything
The foreigner could be a tourist, an artist, a business person or a student.
The girl in the pretty dress could be trying her hardest to make friends.

I wonder what people see when they look at me

What do you want people to see?

Annoyed vs Jedi

This morning something rare happened to me.
I got annoyed.

Those of you who know I work with children may be surprised that it’s rare. But it’s true.
I hate insects, I’m really bad at geography and I get annoyed easily at the post office

Freedom from…

For a long time, I couldn’t help myself
I was addicted! To Chocolate; to Tv; to Manga; to books; to ice cream; to computer games; to lying in bed all day! (actually I’m still working on that last one…)

Many people think “oh, those aren’t serious addictions, they’re just life!”

Get into it!

Whatever you’re doing wherever you go;
Get into it!

When you’re out and about, don’t be half-hearted about things.

Have you ever been out with a group of friends, and one of them says

“Whatever, I’m not really in the mood but…”

Or someone just stays quiet, watches and doesn’t try to get involved.

It really dampens people’s spirits, and makes others feel uncomfortable.
I’ve been guilty of this more than once. Less in recent years.

If you’re involved in something get involved. Take the lead once in a while, see what happens when you’re out with people and want to do things. If everyone in the group is having fun, then it’s easy to keep it that way, figure out what to do, or just be together.

Think about it for a second: your getting ready to go out (guys 15 mins max, girls 30 mins minimum – in my experience), you head out the door, you’re thinking about the day ahead, the people you see and what you’ll do together…What atmosphere do you want to add to today?

Look closer

when you look at this picture what do you see?

It doesn’t matter whether you see the heart, or the people, but what truly matters is that you can’t see everything with just a glance.

Somehow, many of us live our lives that way. Just glancing at people, places and things. Thinking you know what you’ve seen, and forgetting that it goes much deeper than that.

how closely are you really looking at people?

Asking for It

Looking for a seat in a cafe, I can’t help seeing a difference in those who are doing the same as me.

I look for opportunities, where is there a small place that I can get into. “If I can get in there, maybe luck will give me something bigger”

Another, “There’s nothing here, I’ll just leave”

And another, “I’ll stand around and wait”

The last, “I’ll make it very obvious that I’m waiting, till people feel so uncomfortable that they want to leave.”

You can see different attitudes that people have on life if you stay in that cafe long enough. Continue reading
